About Sunbelt Transplants

Meet the Mayfields

Richard Mayfield began Sunbelt Transplants in 1978, to serve the onion transplant needs of growers in the western US. Sunbelt Transplants has grown since, servicing customers throughout the United States as well as Canada and Mexico.

Today the business is carried on by the third generation, Jacob Mayfield.

After graduating college from the University of Arizona, Jacob started working for a produce company in the Pacific Northwest. After four years working in the produce industry, Jacob returned home to help run the family farming operation with his Dad, Gary Mayfield.

With the third generation in place, Sunbelt Transplant is happy to continue our tradition of providing the healthiest onion transplants for growers across the United States!

The Sunbelt Team consists of Jacob Mayfield, Gary Mayfield, Chess Haley, Chris Lovitt, along with an incredible farm and harvest crew. Together this team ensures the best care is taken for customers’ onion transplants from planting to shipment.

Our Growing Process

Arizona’s hot and dry climate creates a prime onion growing environment. On average, Phoenix has almost 300 days of sunshine with less than 6 inches of rainfall per year. These weather conditions allow us to start all three daylength varieties from seed and provide farmers, wholesalers, and gardeners with onion transplants that fit their exact needs. Less humidity means fewer crop protection applications for our onion fields. Our light sandy loam soil and weather make Sunbelt Transplants well-suited to deliver the highest quality conventional and orgranic onion transplants available.

Once grown, our transplants are hand-harvested by our highly-skilled harvest crew that returns year after year to get plants to our customers in a timely manner.
